The 240 year old Kingdom of Nepal has become the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Pro-democracy forces in Nepal have sought full democracy since India became a republic in 1950. Now, after a period of monarchy during which the royals were granted immunity from the laws of the land because they were believed to be incarnations of the Hindu Divinity Lord Vishnu, even former King Gyanendra is an ordinary citizen. Nepal Becomes a Democracy
The title of this subject is wrong, Nepal did not become a Democracy, it became a Republic. There is a big difference. A Republic elects an Elite to Govern in whatever manner they decide whereas a Democracy elect Members to Parliament who are Servants of the People. England is a Democracy and America is a Republic.
